Mary, when I read the testimonial on male puppies by Fran and Leonard Tocci, I felt I needed to reply
because of how much we totally agree with their comments.

One year ago, we began approaching breeders looking for a chocolate female cocker.  A local breeder
responded to us indicating that she had a chocolate male that we would be interested in.  When I replied
that we didn’t want a male, we wanted a female she asked why.  I then indicated that we have had 3
previous female cockers and we believed that the females made sweeter and more loving house pets
than males.  And my wife surely didn’t want a boy running around the yard, lifting his leg and peeing on
all of her plants and bushes.  Wow!  Did that breeder ever give me a lecture!

I originally dismissed her explanation that males are as good and even sometimes better house pets than
females.  I felt that she had a male available for adoption and she was trying to push him.  But her
comments aroused a curiosity in me that I decided to do my own research on the internet.  And during
that research, I found several articles that supported why male cocker spaniels could be considered
better companions and house pets.  The research did not convince us that we wanted a male instead of
a female, but rather that we would now consider a male equally to a female.

Then came our referral to Mary Breidenstein and Stonebroke Garden Cockers where we found our
beloved Jack, who was only 2 weeks old at the time.  After several telephone conversations and
interviews, Mary and Philip agreed to allow us to adopt Jack.  And for the past 11 months, he has been a
joy in our lives.  Jack has been the most loving and affectionate pet we could have ever expected or
wanted.  He is always at our side.  He loves kids, adults, and other pets he encounters.  He has done very
well in obedience school and never stops wagging his tail.  He always tries to please us.

After having 3 female cockers and now a male, can we confidently say that a male is a better house pet
than a female?   We couldn’t say that because each and every pet has their own personality, strengths
and faults.  But for anyone looking for a family pet and companion, don’t close the door because of any
preconceived notions of its gender.  We are so glad to have Jack in our lives, and would definitely
consider another male.

So you think you have to have a little girl? If you can open your mind
and heart to a little boy instead I think you will be very pleasantly
surprised! Two months ago we got a little boy from Mary and Phillip and I
have had 2 girls in the past and as much as I loved both of them I hate to
say they can't compare to this little boy. He is the smartest and sweetest
little guy and taking Mary's advice and getting him neutered at a little over
4 months he will stay this way. The love and care that all these dogs are
born into makes them great pets girl or boy! Working with Mr. H is a joy!
He wants to please his people and the love we get in return cannot be
matched. I got to see all the little guys this week and how can you not
love a face that looks at you like they do? Get a little guy and bring more
joy and love into your home than you thought possible. These aren't "just
dogs" they are kids with fur!

Thinking about adopting a Cocker Spaniel puppy?
We would suggest checking out SBG Cockers – we adopted one last year and are so
happy with our little boy. Originally I wanted a female but my husband read an article
about males vs females and why you should’t overlook the males, they have loving
qualities. We have had both males and females and I would’t have traded any of them
– however I would never overlook a male ever again. Our little guy is so lovable and
snuggly – an absolute love. We got him from SBG when he was 12 weeks old and he
was very easy to train.
We recently went back to visit SBG cockers who have 8 of the most adorable male
puppies. These little fellows are waiting eagerly to have a loving home, each one has
the most lovable personality, their dispositions are very gentle and quiet. They are
love at first sight. They are all so happy and well contented, as well as very socialized.

*Mattydale Lay (Mattydale Load) : The concept of storing preconnected Attack Lines on an
engine, as well as storing them such that they are presented at the sides of the apparatus
instead of the rear. Commonly called a Cross Lay, the technique allows for rapid deployment
of attack lines from either side of the apparatus.
